THRICE

Interview by Meesh at Manchester Academy on March 5th, 2004

Thrice

I recently had the chance to interview lead singer of Thrice - Dustin Kensrue - before their headline date in Manchester during their UK tour..

So what’s been the best show of the tour so far?

I think maybe australia, just because they really loved us there and it’s really suprising. But all the fans are really great.. germany was awesome and the uk shows have been great too...

Did you pick the support band for this tour?

It’s just Vaux, but - it was gonna be coheed too but they couldn’t come.. but we brought Vaux out with us.

Any plans for another single from the current album?

Stare at the sun I guess kinda was our second single in the us, but as far as over here goes... I don’t think were gonna release another single.

So are you gonna go straight into the studio and do another album?

When we’ve finished touring, we have like two more tours at home. Then we're gonna go write and record and put the record out in like late febuary.

Have you started writing for the new album at all?

We’ve started writing seperately, I guess we haven’t had chance to get together and write as band yet though.

What did you think of Zane Lowe, when you guys were on gonzo?

He was real nice to us.

Do think you’ll play reading and leeds again?

Probably not this year... I don’t think were gonna do any festivals... there’s a chance but I think we're just gonna go write instead.

How come you don’t really play anything off Identity Crisis anymore?

We're gonna try play something tonight...

If you could line up a perfect tour, with bands that you love... who would it be?

This is gonna be all over the place and not fit in with our sound musically... but Radiohead, Bjork, Pedro the Lion....

What’s your favourite children’s tv show?

Huh? children’s tv show?... when i was a kid.... hmm... sesame street is awesome, I’m so happy I have kids so I can sit and watch sesame street with them...

What is your favourite song to play live?

It changes all the time... I don’t know now... I think we're ready to write a new album... there’s a point were it’s really cool when it’s coming together.. but the more you play it, the less exciting it gets...

What do you think about the response from older fans, that they don’t really like the new album?

It’s their opinion.... I guess, more people will be pissed off at the next record... I can understand people being attached to a certain record... we don’t really write our stuff to please our fans, we write stuff that we wanna hear ourselves...again, some people love it and some people hate it...

You recorded an acoustic version of ‘Stare At The Sun’, would you ever think about recording an acoustic record?

I don’t think so, I don’t know... we're gonna play with alot of stuff that would blur the line between that.. so I guess it wouldn’t be totally out of the question...

What are the venues you play in america like, compared to what your playng here?

It depends, this is a pretty big show.. 1500 people, this is about what we’d play in america..

What are your favourite bands at the moment?

Tom waits mostley.... I love him... I’ve just been putting my ipod on random... a little Elivs Costello... Moulin Rouge soundtrack....

How would you class yourselves as a band? Becuase you seem to get pigeonholed with an emo tag for some reason...

We’d class ourselves as just rock... I mean we don’t really like alot of bands that are in that scene, but it doesn’t really bother us... I guess on the next record we're gonna distance ourselves a little more from that whole scene.. we just try and do our own thing, I think you're always gonna get grouped with other bands who are doing something vaguely similar... but I don’t know... I really don’t think we sound anything like those bands in that scene...

What’s the meaning of life?

It’s not a question I could answer very easily... but to me, it’s to find truth and find out what that is... and pursue it...
