Daisy Ricochet - Need (Pink Lady Records)

When I recieved the press letter for the NYC based band, Daisy Ricochet, I was apprehensive. Other critics had the audaciousness to compare the band to such supreme rock acts as Everclear, Foo Fighters, and dare they even mention, Radiohead.

Ok, so they may not be any of those bands, but I mean who is? Daisy Ricochet formed about a year ago and in the process have made a very enjoyable rock album. It's not rock perfection like OK Computer, but it's a decent start. With snappy beats and sturdy rock riffs Need takes me back to the late 90's when bands like Fastball and Semisonic were being played on the radio a lot. Lead singer Neil Cabana has a mediocre voice, but plays nicely with the band's retro 90's rock sensibility. Even though they are said to be from NYC, they don't seem to fit the current NYC hipster vibe. They are, thankfully, not a 70's garage rock revival or New Wave revival band. Phew!

The strongest song on the album, "Fix", has a clear pop sensibility. It stands out from the other more somber toned songs on the record. It's the kind of song, that if you heard it on the radio, you'd bop your head. And, if you knew the words, you'd probably want to sing along.

Need isn't perfect, but that's okay. I mean, who can be Radiohead? But, Daisy Ricochet seem to be off to a good start and that's sometimes more important than any glitzy comparisons.
