Sub Rosa - Tea For A Viper EP

Review by Jon

Track Listing:

1. Tea For A Viper
2. Never Before
3. One Age Paradise
4. I’m Right, You’re Dead

Sub Rosa currently have one mission. To shove Leicester into the mosh pit map of rock. Having taking over the city in recent months and years, the quintet of Sub Rosa plan to take over the whole damn country. And they’ve got what it takes.

“Tea For A Viper” is their brand new EP, which teases the brain as to what delights could emerge should Sub Rosa release an album in the near future. Also, “Tea For A Viper” is the opening track on the EP, and the heaviest song on the album. Modern metal clashes violently but brilliantly with alternative indie, and 80s grunge. It sets the album off to a flyer, before it is interrupted by “Never Before”. A song that could cunningly worm its way onto the new Killers album, with a bit of Electric Soft Parade thrown in for good measure. In just two tracks the listener has been launched into a diverse dimension, a dimension with thumping drums, strong vocals and swirling guitars. “One Age Paradise” is softer still, before the album is left on a paradoxic exclamation with “I’m Right, You’re Dead”, a song that combines a slow, moving song with a powerful rock melody, constantly drifting between soft and hard indie rock.

Sub Rosa may be unheard of in some areas outside of the East Midlands, but within their fair county they’ve picked up a name for themselves, including winning the “Best Live Act 2005” within Leicester, and have shared a stage with recognised acts such as The Magic Numbers, Boxer Rebellion and The Features. Naturally, they want to carry this on so that their name is on every pair of lips in England.

The only downside with this EP is that there isn’t enough on it! Don’t tease yourself mindless with this EP – hold your breath and get your mitts on the album. If Sub Rosa make the album as good as the EP it’ll get tongues wagging.
