Speak and The Spells – She’s Dead/Brianna

Review by Rob S

Emerging from deepest, darkest West London in a fug of stripped down, retro vibes, Speak and the Spells are far from your conventional upcoming band. More interested in evoking their collective vinyl collections than whoring themselves out to the highest bidder, the three piece roll out a concertedly non commercial line in garage/punk with plenty of nods to the kind of psychobilly shenanigans of The Cramps et al, ‘She’s Dead’ and ‘Brianna’ providing the requisite macabre lyrical content and twisted surf rock riffs, rounded off by the ‘out there’ instrumental, ‘Caleb Pink.’ It’s all driven forward with plenty of ghoulish enthusiasm, snappy guitar and mildly discomforting catchiness, making this a worthy listen for those of us who seek respite from the bland, mind numbing aesthetic of much mainstream music today, and the best soundtrack to partying in the graveyard to come around for quite a while.*Dust off the turntable and give it a listen.
