Poised to unleash their new EP ‘These Precious Things’ upon the UK music scene, Cumbrian four-piece Kyra may not be the most original proposition that you’ll hear this year, but they could well be one of the most promising; here serving up four well crafted slabs of passionate post hardcore in the vein of early Funeral For a Friend or Fei Comodo, the requisite melody, scope and degree of controlled aggression all present and correct. From the opening title track to the climactic, emotive ‘Somewhere In Between Dreams and Reality’ the band hardly put a foot wrong, opting out of the ‘more is more’ school of musical composition with the resultant tracks endowed with clarity and purpose. A crisp production job from Romesh Dodangoda (Kids in Glass Houses, The Blackout, Twin Atlantic) neatly rounds off the package, emphasising the aforementioned attributes with the skill that an experienced ear brings to the table. We await a full-length with considerable interest, but for now this is a satisfying taster that, while well within the confines of much we’ve heard before, suffers little due to it.
