Protobaby  - Freedom

review by Louise  - added 13/03/2010

Protobaby are a four piece band from Limerick, Ireland who formed in 2008 with their debut album ‘Freedom’ released in 2010. Upon listening to them my initial reactions are that I have been met by very admirable and respectable sounds of a band who offer a strong sense of maturity in their music and lyrics. I am initially flooded with very profound lyrics and uplifting music which also hold very heart-warming undertones and I am instantly drawn to and captivated by this band. Not only this, but I automatically fall in love with Dublin born singer Colms deep baritone voice which evidently echoes the spirit of Johnny Cash.

Ranging from the uplifting and inspiring sounds of songs such as ‘Freedom’ to the more melancholy chilled sounds of ballad ‘Violence on the Wind’; this band offers beautiful, almost dream like sounds which coincide with heartfelt and powerful lyrics. In particular ‘Sold You a Lie’ stands out as offering a very classic rock song that has the quality and spirit of a classic U2 song and instantly makes you want to get up on your feet and jump around.

The sounds of Protobaby have been compared to the likes of bands such as Muse, Radiohead, Joy Division and Interpol and whilst these are very commendable comparisons however in my personal opinion I feel this band has an incredibly unique and dynamic sound.

By the end of this EP I feel like I have been on a dramatic musical journey and I cannot help but feel entranced and captivated by this band, through the five songs offered on this E.P. One could easily immerse themselves in the sounds of this E.P drowning their sorrows and heartache whilst simultaneously gaining a strong sense of positivity and spirit. Overall, they offer a very powerful sound and it appears this band have a lot to offer. Since the release of ‘Freedom’ the band have been busy gigging and promoting around the country and hopefully this is the start of greater things to come from this four piece Irish band.
