At The Zoo  - Nouveau Popular

review by Rob S  - added 03/05/2010

Tamworth indie/ska punk crew At The Zoo display a marked no frills approach on this, their debut EP ‘Nouveau Popular;’ short, snappy and unpretentious, the guys fire out three tunes in around eight minutes, a hit and run record that doesn’t outstay its welcome. Indeed, there’s little pretention about this lot, specialising in delivering on short term impact rather than depth or replay value, something that could well prove their making (or breaking). ‘Love For Granted,’ ‘Non Conformist’ and ‘Scarlet Harlot’ are undeniably catchy, tailored for getting feet moving and crowds singing, not solitary contemplation, and as such their live show is almost guaranteed to be a hoot, raw, loose guitars and quintessentially British vocals soundtracking dancefloor frenzy par excellence. Whether you’d want to listen to ‘Nouveau Popular’ at home would be down to personal taste, but many may find themselves craving a little more substance... either way, At The Zoo could be on their way to big things.
