This was one of those nights that those involved will remember for a long long time.
It wont be as well documented as that famous Pistols gig. There were no soon to be stars in the crowd. But to those who were there it will remain just as big. This was Rock & Roll.
A sign of things to come, the drunk that had draped himself over the centre monitor, woke a little angry and decided to drag said monitor from the stage. Support act Man Made dragging it back as said drunk was ejected with some aplomb by the now packed crowd.
Howler themselves started late, the rest of the band loitering around the stage until Ian announces that Jordan is still downstairs in the bar. A few minutes later he arrives, near empty bottle of JD in hand and apologises.
Now, to be totally honest with you, I cant remember what they started with or ended with or even what came in the middle. I was too busy hanging on to my camera and my life.
What I do recall, is the monitors at the front of the stage being pushed back so far, nudging Howler further back into it. The space generated at the front then became more of the crowd. On the stage with the band. Half way through Howler had to stop for a good five minutes to rectify the loud earthy buzzing noise ringing around the stage. Looking around him in true Rock & Roll style Jordan announces that 'the stage is a mess man! You’ve destroyed it! S**t man!' The sound guy and others working feverishly to find the problem. It could have been the amount of beer poured into the main monitor? It could have been the many cables unplugged by the clambering crowd? Anyhow, the problem sorted, Howler carried on to the obvious delight of the throng who promptly ejected Gatesmith's mic and stand from the stage. I remember seeing it surfing to the back cable still attached, closely followed by the sound guy frantically trying to tug it back. Others had now given up.
There was now only one thing left for Jordan to do but give in and descend into the me-lee himself, closely followed by Ian and then France, Max's under-sole giving them a helping shove.
Those there at that famous Pistols gig recall a spine tingling, hair on the back of the neck raising, phenomenal, exciting, air that night. The Pistols themselves went on to make history. Have we seen and witnessed the same thing right here?
