Liquid Fuse  - Loaded Gun EP

review by Tobester  - added 23/06/2011

Liquid Fuse are a young 5 piece hard rock outfit hailing from Worthing, who are creating a name for themselves as a live powerhouse gigging regularly in their home town and venues in London such as the O2 Academy and The Fiddler’s Elbow.

Quoting Van Halen, Guns’n’Roses and AC/DC as inspiration, their first release – the Loaded Gun EP - is scheduled for release on 1st July 2011, with a video for the title track in the pipeline.  If this EP is anything to go by, it certainly won’t be their last.

The title track ‘Loaded Gun’ starts ominously with a EVH style wolf whistle - but just as you think it’s going to be another run-of-the-mill Poison / Motley Crue tits’n’ass fest, with the corniest intro and lyrics this side of The Troubadour, LA (circa 1985) the rock-solid riff, the quality of the playing, and the exceptional song-writing hits you like a freight train.

This is why this EP deserves your attention.  ‘Loaded Gun’ begs to be played over and over on eleven, while the mid-tempo ‘Sands’, grows and grows – from the mellow opening licks it quickly kicks in and then builds like a great rock’n’roll song should.  It’s got to be said the guitar tone is sumptuous, and sits perfectly with the vocal in an exceptionally well produced track for a first EP.

The final song, ‘Now It’s Time’, pays homage to AC/DC but with the swagger of G’n’R.  Again the riffing is top notch, and seamlessly blends the influences into another very listenable song.

There are some rough edges (a little more attention to detail perhaps required on some solos for example) but this is exemplary song writing – making you want to come back for more and more, and I am genuinely looking forward to their first full album.  Perhaps a darker, edgier feel could be added here and there to broaden the appeal but I’ve only got the three tracks here to go by.

All three songs feature drumming of exceptional quality, and although a little raw in places, the lead guitar gives hints of southern influences - a little Skynyrd perhaps - plus a touch of Hendrix in there as well especially on ‘Sands’.

But above all it’s the riffs that get me.  And if you let them, they’ll get you too.
