Avenge Vulture Attack  - Renew

review by Pete RingMaster  - added 03/06/2011

With all the intense relentlessness their name suggests Ealing band Avenge Vulture Attack release their brand new EP Renew. Previous releases especially their last single Murder In The Nth Degree have made people sit up and listen to the Londoners with their rock pop attack and clever use of melodies so eager interest in the new EP is sure to be concentrated.

As great as the previous singles and EPs were Renew raises their creative bar and flourishes on a more aggressive and attitude soaked punk attack. The tight and flowing melodies are not neglected but there is a firm punch to the whole of the release, the quartet of songs vibrant and forceful. Their previous almost Paramore like sound has evolved to something more akin to Karn 8 meets 70’s punk band Penetration, with vocalist Ella Grace at times almost an audio double of the latter band’s  singer Pauline Murray.

Opening track Seven Dirty Bad Things sets the pace with strong riffs and melodies and though at first appears like a solid and satisfying but maybe routine AVA set up  their inventive skills soon drive any thoughts of that away as they throw in seductive hooks and soaring harmonies all with punk venom. Vocally Grace is in full charge; she owns the listener and the further the EP progresses the more she bites and snarls with her expansive voice. Title track Renew continues the attack with the same direct set up whilst You Are Nothing, a slightly slower pop rock track, sizzles with emotive aggression. The lyrics bite especially hard here and on the last track, Grace snapping with pissed off tenacity.  That last and the best track on the EP is All About You with a bass riff that delights, stirring guitar parts and drums that hold it all tightly tethered. Of course vocally and lyrically again we are made aware this is one lady not to be messed with.

Avenge Vulture Attack is a band on the rise and the new and harder edge to their sound impressive and a striking positive for the future. From the artwork, the EP wonderfully being on a vinyl cd, and through the four great tracks within, the release is a well thought out and inspired package. Renew shows that pop punk is a genre with life after all and Avenge Vulture Attack the band to keep it interesting.
