It seems wrong to bitch about anything at a free gig, but Gallows really don't kick things off too well. Jamie Jasta isn't a small lad, and as laughable as Hatebreed are at times, he wears a bandana and other generic hard-man type things. Frank Carter however looks like the wee ginger kid who everyone picked on at school. Even the fat kids. The angry act isn't even pathetically entertaining and after some dire covers songs it's not long before most people are wishing they could skip to the next sound check.
Roots Manuva will split the already varied crowd even more, But even those who aren't fond of rap can be seen involuntarily bopping around the park. Spirited and tonnes of fun.
As some worrying looking clouds gather in the sky, the real party arrives. Golgol Bordello unleash their special brand of Eastern European punk over London. Jumping, dancing, stomping, jigging, highly questionable facial hair. If this band is missing something, you don't want it! But it truly is a grand thing to watch a band getting so into their own music.
A cartoon Simon Cowell graces the screens, man boob and jacked-up trouser jokes galore. It then happens. Six months after their promise (and ten minutes later than scheduled) Rage Against The Machine hit the stage. Their messages of peace for all and rebellion against oppression fly over the heads of the Finsbury crowd as they tear the park a new somethingorother. Due to being late and having to abide by curfew laws (so much for fucking the system, eh?) the set is a bit shorter than most would like, but all the classics are blasted out. 'Township Rebellion' being a real highlight of the night. Something about Israel and Palestine is uttered by Zach, but it falls on selectively deaf ears who just wish to cause merry havoc. A short encore is had then the band come back with you know what song. Even if some picky people point out the flaws in thousands of people yelling ''Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me'', the atmosphere of this concert will never leave the hearts of those who attended. Nothing short of special.
