Revengine  - EP - II

review by Rob S  - added 31/05/2009

On this, their second E.P, (well yeah, obviously...) Finnish Trio Revengine manage to take a musical style which may sound awful on paper, and save it from disposability, quite an achievement. Coming across as a mix of mid nineties alt-rock, with dashes of grunge and ‘Load’ era Metallica thrown in for good measure, you could be forgiven for rolling your eyes and backing away, but II is not bad at all. The heavier, more upbeat, hard rock moments are sure to get your foot tapping, and while some of the softer moments may not always maintain the standard, (to these ears at least,) a full album would be an intriguing prospect, and an opportunity to dabble in more varied dynamics. If US bands like Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman can sell millions of records plying something very similar, but more polished and sanitised, then I can see no reason that Revengine can’t garner a modest level of success.
