Listening to ‘Self Inflicted,’ the new EP from New York State quartet Candella, it’s difficult not to flash back to the less cringe-worthy stage of Nu-metal’s dominance; the days when Korn were stylistic revolutionaries and the blueprint remained fresh, ripe for experimentation and exploration. Placing equal emphasis upon sludgy, downtuned riffs, impassioned melodies and subtle atmospheric touches, the US newcomers are quintessentially American in delivery and style… I mean this as no detriment to them; simply that the kind of soaring vocals and gritty guitar work that we jaded hacks could lazily group in with the nu have maintained a relatively constant following stateside, while in the UK their draw has waned somewhat. Nevertheless, ‘Alive and Missing,’ ‘Numb’ and the three additional tracks that make up this EP show as much appreciation for the virtue of brains along with the inevitable (and effective) brawn, ensuring that this is more than just WWE fodder of the future. Likely to draw favourable comparisons to another US outfit making waves on our shores, Five Finger Death Punch, Candella deliver a promising degree of ingenuity to complement their arsenal of gratifying choruses, proving that they’re potential contenders of the future, and worth keeping tabs on for the foreseeable.
