If you were to imagine an uncharacteristically upbeat Interpol number with dark melodic undercurrent intact, topped with some tasteful electronic elements that the likes of Depeche Mode and New Order brought to prominence in the 80s and an accessible, chart bothering hook thrown in for good measure, one might end up with something along the lines of ‘Tell Me What I Want,’ the new single from Black Country Quartet, Isolated Atoms. Coming at a time when Synths are once again in vogue and a strong Joy Division influence is almost ubiquitous within certain areas of the mainstream music scene (Editors, Bloc Party et al,) ‘Tell Me What I Want’ and companion piece ‘Here We Go’ are almost assured of finding success given the appropriate time and opportunity; Grant Ashman’s distinctive vocals going a fair way in setting this lot apart from the competition, of which there is much. It’s well written, solidly played fare, and fans of the aforementioned bands, as well as those gazing into their crystal balls to catch a glance of the charts of tomorrow, would do well to keep their ears open to this lot.
