Decidedly left-field, with an arsenal of off-kilter rhythms and mind bending time signatures, Common Deflection Problems are near impossible to pin down, flitting between genres in an instant from gritty, distorted guitars and unbridled chaos to sunny, yet ever shifting, indie rock melody; on their first EP Naked, the trio (Currently based in London, but originally formed in Italy) have created an experience in some ways akin to being trapped within a musical hurricane. Whether that appeals to you or not is largely down to personal inclination, but there are many interesting ideas contained within these five tracks, and when delving into Fugazi territory on ‘Overload’ or the bordering on commercial vibe of ‘Tottenham Court Road,’ there’s a degree of artistic direction and cohesion to be seen that bodes well for the future… this isn’t yet perhaps the finished article, but no one’s expecting it to be. If the band continue to hone their craft together (CDP were formed in 2008) there may well be a musical niche waiting for them somewhere along the line; the ideas and intension are genuinely interesting, and that’s, in my book, among the most important features to look for in an upcoming band. Everything else (within reason) can come with time.
