Avosetta  - Of Our Lives

review by Rob S  - added 05/12/2009

Rumour has it that if all of the promising upcoming bands in the UK jumped at precisely the same time, the Earth would be jolted from its axis by the resulting global shockwave. That may or may not be scientifically accurate (and may or may not be a groundless assertion used by a caffeine addled journalist to make a point) but the general point stands; the UK is hardly lacking in potentially great bands at the moment, a state of affairs that calls for more recognition from our overly cynical selves I might opine. Hyperbole aside, arriving to bolster the ranks are Norfolk five-piece Avosetta, armed with a clutch of technically adept post-hardcore tunes to make the world sit up and take notice.

Over the four tracks that make up their debut EP ‘Of Our Lives,’ Avosetta bring together moments of great dissonance and clarity, grounded in melody while driven by churning, stormy riffs such as that which propels the opening title track and the raging ‘Snakecharm the Dead Whale’ forward at impressive pace. Demonstrating a capacity for penning more thoughtful, restrained ‘lighters in the air’ moments alongside all the bluster as shown on the memorable refrain of ‘Warship Lanterns,’ these guys could have a bright future ahead of them if they can continue to build on this initial promise, and avoid reliance upon overused genre staples (breakdowns, cookie monster vox and so on). The same could be said of many others of course, but in the bizarre lottery that is the music industry, Avosetta have got themselves a hot ticket. ‘Of Our Lives’ is due out early next year, hopefully to be followed by numerous opportunities to check out the band’s all important live show, but until then we’ll have to be content with the tracks uploaded to their MySpace page...
