‘Transcend,’ the debut EP from enigmatic ‘virtual band’ Virtual Humans is a somewhat difficult release to weigh up. The brainchild of songwriter Heider Broisler Falcao, Virtual Humans are a band cloaked in mystery, recalling the heydays of vintage prog rock through a mix of thought provoking, complex lyrical themes and upbeat instrumentation akin to a prototypical Rush. Similarly to the aforesaid Canadian legends, this experimental collective is likely to divide opinion, undeniably and purposefully striding out of the norm in approach, if not always in musical style. As an experiment in the cloudy and as yet largely unexplored world of digital identity and community Virtual Humans are of much interest, and the band (take a look at their online bio and discuss the finer points of what constitutes a ‘band’ if you like) show, on the likes of ‘Transcend (Part Two)’ and ‘Trajectory’ a notable level of songwriting prowess.
This is one that you’ll really have to decide for yourselves on; as anyone that dares to challenge the expectations of an artform soon discovers, there’s are few things as divisive as innovation, and ‘Transcend’ is no exception. Definitely worth a Google.
