Pan and The Poets Newly formed Pan and The Poets are a charismatic bunch hailing from the West Midlands. If you like your music served with skillful variety, keep reading, it’s possible you’ve just discovered your new favourite band.
Describing their sound is by no means an easy feat. Placing six astute musicians together on one stage causes not only a bit of a tight squeeze but also provokes a multitude of influences and ideas to come through in their music. This is already evident in their songs and will only become more prolific as time passes. It’s definitely something to be excited about.
‘Love Receipt’, the sole track to be posted on their MySpace so far, makes a very good first impression of the band. But let it be known that the ability of these bright young things cannot be fully appreciated through laptop speakers. Pan and The Poets are best served live.
The aforementioned track provokes comparison to the likes of Johnny Flynn and a more loose comparison to recent folk chart successes, Mumford and Sons. However comparisons to such artists do not warrant this band to be typecast. Definitely not! It’s important to re-iterate the variety that this band delivers. A wider range of instruments at their disposal makes for a richer sound and the possibilities, not to sound like a recent recycling advert, endless.
Pan and The Poets have set out to play by their own set of rules. It seems they have heard one too many music artists pumping out similar sounding songs one after another. Therefore, their motto is simple: Make profound and unconventional music while ensuring that each of their creations are, within reason, atypical to the next.
True to their word, throughout Pan and The Poets’ recent inaugural performance at the Varsity in Wolverhampton it was impossible to mistake one of their songs for another. Each track they have produced is distinctive and distinguishable from the next, a trait they have realised too many artists lack in recent times. Consciously setting out to avoid this pitfall is advantageous; Who ever said that having a niche means you can only attract a niche audience? The musical diversity that this band possesses means they have more to offer to a wider range of audiences than primarily thought.
In terms of performing, practice really does make perfect. With a few more shows under their belt this band could very likely be delivering something eminent live. At just one show old, Pan and The Poets have by no means removed their cards from their chest just yet. You’re going to have to keep your eye on this lot! Check out their MySpace or join the Pan and the Poets Facebook group to stay current with the band.
