Goole, Yorkshire isn’t exactly renowned for producing great up and coming bands, but despite the material realities of their sleepy hometown, glam flavoured hard rock five piece Velvet Star’s spiritual homeland is most definitely the sleazy, never sleeping rock ‘n’ roll paradise of LA’s Sunset Strip circa 1987, a land of excess, ear splitting volume and clouds of hairspray sufficient to block out the sun. Taking the cocksure glam metal blueprint laid down by the likes of Motley Crue and L.A Guns and throwing in a wad of G’N’R-esque riff-o-rama, these northern lads show plenty of confidence and swagger over the seven tracks that constitute their debut, self titled, EP, the unselfconsciously Lecherous vocals of Danny Jones ensuring that ‘Something About You’ and ‘Give In To Me’ are amusingly un PC highlights of what is a rather decent release. There’s plenty of work to be done here, and as many acts brazen enough to take influence from the aforementioned acts have discovered it’s all too easy to lapse into homage or parody at times... but as a whole, this is enjoyable. Just don’t expect anything revolutionary- this is a fun listen put together by promising musicians, but it’s not going to rip up the musical rulebook. If you’re ok with that, dust off your air guitar, as you’re going to need it.
