Radiate: EP 5 track - Talk Out Your Solution

Review by Ellen

A four piece band, Steve Bradfield -(Vocals, guitar and mandolin) Tim Jackson -(bass) G -(Drums, percussion and backing vocals) and Quest -(guitar). So far the guys have been working on producing new material and playing at various venues across the UK such as London Hippodrome, Shepherds Bush Empire and festivals -Green Belt and Guildfest. With the release of their 3rd EP this year, they look set to fully break-through on to the music scene. They are constantly on the go, performing as much as they can, trying to get their sound heard by as many potential fans as possible. Radiate are currently planning to play more venues closer to home, but are focusing on gigging further away, also preparing for bigger headlining dates.

When listening to this EP I was pleasantly suprised by what I found. The music is much calmer and more melodic than I imagined it to be, having previously looked at the images before listening to the material. With the use of a mandolin it sets them apart from most bands. The music itself is an intriguing mix, consisting of coarse and at times straining vocals, gentle mandolin picking and placid drumming. It's definitely a cd to chill out to, impacting and deeply emotional due to the way Steve manages to project his voice. He has a varied vocal range from low pitches to high. Radiate I feel give themselves an advantage by going against some certain conventions. For example, they are a refreshing change from what most of us are used to, with the absense of growling in their work. A plus point I would say for a group like this who could have easliy attempted to put them in. Although some might say that these 5 tracks are a bit bland, there is something touching about them (espcially the 6th hidden track) I received goosebumps whilst hearing it for the first time. Their style is similar to bands such as Feeder and x-is-loaded, same tempo and arrangement. Radiate are a band you could imagine having a stunning presence when seeing a live performance.
