PERFUMA

Interview by Jess

What have you been up to recently? Any highlights from 2006 so far?

2006 has been great for us so far. We've been playing some great shows, lots of people coming out and supporting us in every state we play in. As far as highlights I'd probably say the Sonic Youth listening party we played in New York City. Male go-go dancers in cages. That's all I gotta say.

How did the band form?

The band formed when I (Adam) demoed some songs I had written and wanted to play them in front of an audience. So I asked my friends Eric and Brock to play with me. And our drummer Mesi came along later.

What kind of music are you into? Who are your all-time favourite bands/musicians?

I can be into any kind of music. Even pop. But my favorite all time bands are Nirvana, the Beatles, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, and Fleetwood Mac. And an honorable mention would be Elastica.

Do you have any funny tour stories? Have you ever received any strange gifts from fans?

In Virginia, our van broke down at an army fort (totally not important but a nice random element). So we hauled it to the local mechanic and his shop was like something out of the movie 'House of 1000 Corpses.' There were big dogs walking around, ghosts asking us for directions...ya know, weird stuff. He takes our van and says it'll be awhile to fix. So he offers his friend to drive us back to town, so we get in the car and it catches fire while we drive...and the driver says "don't worry the wind will put it out." Needless to say, we got freaked out, so we asked him to drop us off at a supermarket. None of us had slept yet from the nite before, so we went behind the supermarket and slept next to the dumpsters with the stray cats from the area. A few hours later we woke up from being gnawed on too much, got our van and vowed never to return there again. True story..... The strangest gift I ever received from a fan was a broken rear view mirror from a car. She said "I thought you might like this" and I did.

Do you argue a lot when on tour?

Yea, but only about who has the cigarette lighter, and Eric gets mad when you don't drink your juice quick enough for him to use the bottle as a toilet. Not even kidding.

If you could tour in any country in the world, where would you like to go?

Its a tie between England and Japan.

Lots of bands are using websites such as myspace.com to gain fans and recognition, how effective do you think these sites are in promoting bands such as yourselves?

Extremely effective. It allows bands to promote to people right in their homes, which is probably the most effective advertising....plus its free. So that just adds to its potential.

Now for a random question...If you could spend the day with anyone famous, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Alejandro Jodorowsky solely because he once said 'most directors make films with their eyes, I make films with my testicles.

What has the band got planned for the rest of the year?

We are really focusing on touring this year. We have a summer tour of the U.S. In July and there will be about two or three more tours after that before 2006 is over. We also plan to record a few more songs and maybe even release our first full length. Busy year!

Finally, is there anything else you'd like to add or promote?

I'd like to invite you all to visit our online store to pick up our first EP 'Humans Are Dangerous' because its not in stores in England yet. www.perfuma.net.

Thanks to vocalist Adam Bird for answering my questions, and thanks to Joelle from Audio Crush PR, and make sure you check out Perfuma's site!
