THE OFFSPRING - NOODLES

Interview by Charlotte via Email in March, 2004

I was lucky enough to get myself an e-mail interview with the oh-so amazing Noodles from The Offspring recently, and just how fucking cool is he? Read on to find out about his views on George Bush, the new record and his amazing defence glasses! I would also like to give a HUGE hug to PR Goddess Chrissie Yiannou, who does more for this site that you can ever appreciate! Thanks again!! And on with the show...

How do UK fans compare to US ones?

They tend to be more British, and they definitely drink more. That being said, we don't seem to get as many obnoxious drunks in the UK as we do in the US. We've been real fortunate to always have really energetic audiences in the UK.

You were the first rock band I ever liked, and you opened a lot of doors for me, which bands from when you were younger introduced you to the whole rock scene?

Well at the time I was really getting into buying records and going to shows it was the punk scene that really grabbed me. Bands like The Sex Pistols, The Dickies, X, The Ramones, The Clash, and TSOL just blew my mind. The rock scene at the time had become pretty stagnant and, rather than breathe new life into that scene, these bands blew it apart. They were trying things that broke all the rules that most rock bands were obeying in order to "make it."

Your new album, Splinter, didn't do as well in the UK charts as some of your previous releases, why do you think that is? And does it really bother you?

I think that our first single off this record, "Hit That," though it's a real catchy song, just doesn't sound as new as say "Pretty Fly" did. But I honestly believe that Splinter is as strong or stronger than any record we've done before, and the more people hear of it, the more they'll want to go and buy it. You always want your next record to be received at least as well as your last one, and record sales is one way of measuring your success, but so is how well the new songs go over in a live concert. We've been playing more new songs than ever before with great reception. These songs really seem to be resonating with our audiences. In fact one of the biggest complaints we seem to be getting from our fans is that we are not playing enough of the new record. All in all we are very pleased with how this record is doing and how the tour is going.

If you could be anyone for the day, who would you be and why?

I'd love to be George Bush for a day. I'd spend the whole day doing televised interviews wearing a dress and pointing out just how many lies I've told over the last four years.

What's the most embarrassing CD in your collection?

Permission To Land by The Darkness.

What's your favourite tour bus activity?

I don't think I should go into that, but I also like to watch movies and drink beer.

Who do you think is the worst band out there at the moment?

Any and all of the pre-fabricated pop boy/girl bands.

If you could punch any celebrity, who would it be? And if you could sleep with any celebrity, who would it be?

I try not to punch people. I strongly believe in non-violent means to solve disputes. I would however love to beat the shit out of Michael Bolton, for purely aesthetic reasons. And, I would love to fuck the shit out of Jennifer Connelly.

Time for the totally pointless, random question…. would you rather be poked in the eye by a penguin or kicked by a sheep?!!

I doubt that the penguin would be able to penetrate the defensive shield of my glasses, so I'll take the penguin.
