The Fairytale - Songs EP
Review by Jess
The Fairytale (previously called Nymph) are a three piece (Dan Sheridan on vocals and guitar, Sam Bicknell on bass and Lizzy Adams on drums) 'punk/rock band' from Birmingham, with influences ranging from Black Sabbath to Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins. They are set to record a full album in the New Year, but for now, here is a review of their EP.
The 'Songs EP' starts off with 'Lalala', and almost immediately your head is filled with an infectious riff; dirty and gritty and about as far away from the connotations of 'Lalala' as you can get. Dan Sheridan's vocals then come in; his voice has a slightly haunting quality to it, and this contrasts well with the heavier music.
Second track is 'His Own Little World' and it starts with a series of strange echoing noises before fading in to the slow paced but catchy music. Again, the vocals change what would be a fairly regular, chilled-out track to something a little more unique.
The last track is 'Pink'; this is a little more up-tempo, but the haunting vocals remain the same. The music in this song is infectious, especially near the end where Dan's vocals give way to a scream and the music is left for you to focus on. You can clearly tell by this track that every member of the band is a talented musician, and they work brilliantly together.
Overall, I was very impressed with this CD. The tracks all have great lyrics and music, and with the quality of the CD production added to that, 'Songs' sounds like it could be a recording from a well-established rock group; this young band definitely has a lot of potential.
