Novello - Surface (Dragonflii Records)
Review by Nikki
Tracks- 1.Surface
2. The Lawman
3. Face With A Photo
New band “Novello” bring us their first single “Surface,” the CD also containing songs “The Lawman” and “Face With a Photo”. Novello are a three-piece rock band from the Valleys of South Wales, consisting of Nic on vocals and lead guitar, Adrian on bass and at the moment a drummer from elsewhere is filling the gap. On listening to these songs it's clear “Novello” are another guitar based, melodic band, relying on catchy riffs to catch the audience’s attention. And they do this with some success; they are indeed catchy and pleasing to the ear. The singers voice is a growl-like melodic mixture; again, another good point about the band.
The main single “Surface” for me never really gets going, it’s all right but nothing much more to be said. “The Lawman” however shows more riffage and an altogether better song. The last song “Face With A Photo” lies somewhere in between the other tracks, with some good guitar riffs. However, again it doesn’t seem to get going. This band is nothing amazingly new or fresh but are very good at the music they do. The question that remains is the same as with all these guitar-based bands around now-a-days; will Novello capture peoples minds? Will they find themselves in the hearts of the buying public? Only time will tell.
