Review by Rob S
Elegantly formed and competently delivered, ‘The Crayon Masterpiece,’ debut EP from London trio Motorcycle Display Team, brings a veritable tonne of melodious hooks and jaunty guitar work to the realm of British Pop rock ; with a deceptively laid back delivery, these lads channel a catalogue of influences into something toe-tappingly endearing. One can sense the abrasive, raw undercurrent concealed beneath these bright and poppy ditties, but the band, who have been active for the past eighteen months under the name of Sancho Panza, always keep the emphasis on ear friendly tones and vocals, commercially viable while retaining enough substance and bite to be of interest more seasoned or jaded listeners. While running along similar lines to enough upcoming and established bands to form a chain all the way to the moon and back multiple times, frontman Stephen Hinds’ vocals set the band apart somewhat in their thoughtful, measured approach and at times Matt Bellamy-esque use of dynamics , and with plenty of time and scope for development, there’s no sign of consignment to the voluminous ‘could have been’ graveyard of the UK music community. Overall then, promising stuff, and it’s worth taking a gander at MDT’s myspace where all four tracks are online.
