Monokey – Post Hate Obsession

Review by Phil

It may only be organic greengrocers that articulate the infamous idiom that home grown produce tastes better, but Monokey’s ‘Post Hate Obsession’ provides evidence for this set phrase that is second to none. Monokey create an irrepressible, raw, energetic sound that will seize your eardrums, arrest your spine, detain your senses and demand you pay attention.

‘Post Hate Obsession’ is a four-track demo that illustrates an undeniable insight into the original talents – which elsewhere have been lost through the fabrication of manufactured music – of the alternative-metal band. The CD was completely recorded and produced in Monokey’s home studio; as a result it captures the almost-innate realism and rawness of an independent rock band without compromising sound quality. When a band is able to create music and spread their cause to such a high-degree off their own backs, it sends out a clear retina-stimulating signal that they are playing music that has to be heard for its sheer aptitude.

What struck me as refreshingly impressive was the band’s ability to create such diversity channelled through both the verbal and musical mediums. Within just four songs, the band produces a complete array of imposing tones, pitches and lyrics. The band fuses hard-hitting, destructible metal with angelic melody to such an exponential degree; it becomes difficult not to admire a part of the band’s sound for all music fans regardless of their genre precedence.

Each song offers a fresh, native type of sound which cannot go unappreciated by any fan that is sick of the monotonous tribulation that plagues some CDs after a thorough listening. My personal favourite from this demo is the song ‘Shadows’ which made a huge impact on me as it comes last in the track list. The song offers a melodic intro with powerful, meaningful vocals and then progresses into a captivating alternative-rock triumph. It depicts a complete synchronisation between fast, unquenchable spine-shaking rock music, established melody and thought-provoking vocals that produces something nothing short than a modern anthem.

My only criticism with this demo is in parts it does not strike out as much as it could to an audience’s senses. Parts of Monokey’s sound will have you in awe; others will simply keep your senses occupied. Taking into account of my personal preference, songs like ‘Shadows’ will instantly grab you and make you listen. Although they make excellent listening, the rest of the songs do not jump out as a whole with the same epic impact.

What also disappointed me is that I was only able to listen to and base my review on four tracks. People who hear this demo will no doubt be disappointed with the inability to get their hands on a complete album. Although this does highlight the unquenchable aspect and freshness of Monokey’s music, after hearing four songs I can think of nothing better than to put my whole-hearted effort into hearing some more.

An impressive, impacting, sense-refreshing demo that is difficult to fault. This well-produced sample of Monokey’s talent is imposing enough in itself to warrant a post hate musical obsession in every ear it graces.
