Due to my recording equipment malfunctioning prior to a telephone interview with the guitarist of one of Britain's finest underground traditional metal bands I'm unable to deliver the interview in it's traditional format of Q&A. Never the less...
As I have said before, Marshall Law are one of the finest underground metal bands in the UK, forming twenty years ago they've released a fair amount of albums, including their latest release, Razorhead. Guitarist Dave Martin divulges information about the new album, future plans and past experiences.
As many of you may have guessed by the album title and cover art, the album is deeply influenced by Andy Pyke's (vocals) love of horror films and Dave's adoration of sci-fi, Clive Barker being a key name. As for musical influences, a fair chunk of classic bands were mentioned, Scorpions, Sabbath and Priest, as these were bands that Martin and Pyke had both grown up with. As for more modern examples Rob Zombie was a surprise mention. some of the band's newest members have been bringing their love of technical rock into the album's creation as well.
Razorhead has been in the making for roughly three years, the band tried to take on the entire project by themselves but eventually realised they needed help, They recruited Mark Stewart, who had aided the band in the past.
As for future touring plans, there are a few things in the pipeline. European festivals were mentioned a fair bit as well as supporting an unnamed American band that would be touring the UK for a few dates in 2009.
When questioned about the band's performance at this years Bloodstock festival kind words were used and fond memories were talked of, a desire to play the main stage in the future was also uttered. As always, some dream tour line ups were talked of, playing with Maiden and Priest were fairly predictable responses, but to hear Killswitch Engage mentioned was a bit of a shock to the system.
Being the kind chap that his is, Mr Martin gave away some free advise to the young bands out there, learn what business you are getting into, it will help you survive longer, also, concentrate on those around you. Advice from someone with twenty years of experience isn't something to turn your nose up at!
Razorhead is being received very well by most, although there are a few morons out there with inept ears who are sending out fairly indifferent reviews. I for one wish Dave + co the best of luck and I hope to catch them on the road next year.
