Creatures are an upcoming band from South London, raw with talent, virgins to the gig scene; they are a band hungry for more.
Currently unsigned and not gigging on the pub scenes at the moment, the band is at the initial stage of creating their music. With this rawness comes some very strong views on the music scene and the political involvement.
Guitarist, Hywel Evans, 21, believes that politicians and campaigners, who use music for their gain, are simply wrong. He comments, “I think it is a gimmick to try and connect with voters to give the perception that they know what’s ‘going on,’ but in truth they don’t’ really have a clue.”
The band offers a harsh, and upfront sound that is heavy on the ears but they don’t want to be involved in the complex game of politics, there is no room for any politically fronted music for this band.
For Creatures their music is an escape from reality, they just want to enjoy the sounds they create and leave out all the problematic issues of politics. He explains, “Once you start talking about politics things get messy, I leave that to bands like system of a down and rage against the machine, they’ve been doing a great job for years.”
The political side of music may have lost the significant touch that it once had, with artists like Bob Dylan. Hywel insists that his band will not play a part in any political music; it’s more about having fun and enjoying the self made sounds at this present moment in time.
Bands like the Sex Pistols were extremely rebellious and politically aware. However, Hywel feels that it is more enjoyable to just listen to music rather than read into its political messages. He said, “They’ve had a minor influence in shaping the music I create” it’s about “Enjoying the rawness of the music.”
The band seems well crafted and has potential to do well in gigs around pubs and small clubs. Hywel represents the view of the young minded people of today. A fresh attitude and a fresh opinion towards the political music scene. Maybe music and politics are drifting away from each other,
Music is now seen as a form of enjoyment and escape, where it was once also involved in political messaging, it feels that now bands such Creatures are just looking for enjoyment and relaxation within their music.
Hywel comments on some artists saying, “They don’t care about the music they just want to know when they are able to buy another Maybach.” It seems that manufactured T.V style artists are an issue that take the shine off of some of the more traditional approaches into entering music. Music is a game of politics, as to who is the best looking, most popular, most money. Bands like Creatureswant to steer away from political issues and political music, because at the present moment, within the current situation of the credit crunch alongside the vast array of other depressing events, music is now more a route of enjoyment and relaxing, rather than political fronting.
