Interview by Kiya with The Band on 29 December 2009

Deadbeatz inc are a unique twosome, with their blend of hip hop, folk, rock and reggae, the band have 2 vocalist one which raps and one which sings and their instrument of choice which is a acoustic guitar. The duo are from West Chester PA and have been writing music together since 2005, the band first EP is called ‘Vice versa ‘ this dynamic duo are set to take the world by storm and Rock pulse gets the first interview with them, it’s time for the world to sit up and listen to what these twosome have got to say.

How did you come up with the name?

We really liked the simplicity of the name "DeadBeatz". it implies that we have a lack of responsibility, or shrug the responsibilities we do have, which is very true. the "inc" part represents the business aspect of the whole thing. I guess you could say we want to make a business out of our lifestyle.

What are your influences?

Rhythm, rhyme, and harmony.

What comes first to you music or lyrics?

For me, the music comes first. I usually write a piece, record it, then work out vocal melodies. with that in place you can really get a feel for what the words in the song should be about. Buds on the other hand likes to write his rhymes to no music. so in that case he tells me what he has written about, and I build a beat around it.

You guys combine rock, reggae and hop hip together is that hard?

No its not hard. in fact we have to do it that way. we love all music, so we must explore it all.

Going off from the last question, if you had to pick between rock and hip hop which would it be?

That would be like choosing between food and water. but I must say that the mutual love for hip hop was what brought us together as a band.

Some musicians are the way they are because of a certain thing that has happened to them in their lives is that the case with you guys?

I would say that’s a fair statement. Both of our parents got divorced around the same time. Our fathers were unhappy with their jobs all of our lives. Both of our mothers were creatively driven and very supportive of us. I guess those things had a lot to do with the way we turned out.

Is there a message behind your music?

I'd like to think we can tackle a multitude of subjects. but some underlining messages might be to slow down, enjoy life, pursue not money but happiness, and be good to one another.

Have you had any experience in the music industry?

Have spent the past 2 years as a tech for Madina Lake, which I can say has been the best time of my life. I also attended The Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA to study sound engineering.

How did you form the band?

Buds is my best friend, and he was really shy about his talent as an MC early on. so when I finally heard him, I was blown away. he was reluctant to record, but when we finally did he really enjoyed it, and the ball kept rolling.

Are you afraid that people won’t like your sound? or are you looking forward to being a part of some different?

I know people won't like our sound, and I know people will love it. I prefer it that way. that’s so much better that someone saying..."it’s okay". At the very least I hope when people listen to it, they can tell that its coming from a real place.

What’s next for the band?

We found three awesome and talented guys to play in the live band. so by spring we will be touring with our first full length record.

Describe DeadBeatz inc in 5 words?

Driven, real, unique, comfortable, and awesome.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Playing alongside the likes of 3OH!3, Swayze, LMFAO, and Asher Roth...and making it difficult for them when we go on first.
