 Silverstein

Interview by Suzi with Paul and Neil on 24 August 2003

Silverstein live

At the moment you're on solid touring for almost 2 Months. How are you holding up?

Paul: We're all holding up fine and enjoying ourselves very much. We've all been sick a bunch of times, but we've been maintaining our good spirits from day to day.
Neil: We've been doing pretty well. Our van broke down in Missouri in July but we didn't let that stop us. But, so far its been a blast!

Do you find it difficult to tour for long periods of time?

Paul: Not really. You get used to it.
Neil: Not really, I mean, as long as everyone is healthy and in good shape that's all that really matters

What do you do to avoid arguments starting up or do you all get along really well even under the stress of touring?

Paul: Arguments arise, but that's only human nature. We deal with things as best we can but we never hold any grudges over each other.
Neil: Everyone has the tendency to get angry or argumentative but it only lasts a couple of minutes, depending on the situation. We get along pretty well though. We're all tight with each other.

Do you have any funny tour stories?

Paul: Too many to share. I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Neil: We were in Panama City, Florida on our day-off and decided to spend the whole morning on the beach. We were having so much fun snorkelling and catching small land crabs because we don't really have nice ocean beaches up in Ontario Canada. Well, the next day everyone woke up in pain, we were all severely sunburned! We used some lotion on the beach, I guess it wasn't good enough. Bill got it the worst, his back was redder than a tomato! I fortunately only got my legs and feet burned. It isn't really that funny of a story, I'm sorry, hahaha.

You've recently released your debut victory records album "when broken is easily fixed" Have you been pleased with the reaction to it so far?

Paul: Yah we've actually been overwhelmed with the reaction so far. Sales have been great, the kids have been enjoying the music, and things just seem to be going great.
Neil: I'm so very pleased with the responses to the record. Record sales are doing so well for us right now, I'm so happy!

Is it what you expected?

Paul: I'd say probably even more.
Neil: I had no expectations, good or bad.

How long have you been playing your respective instruments for?

Paul: For most of us probably between 7-12 years.
Neil: I've been playing guitar for about 9 years now.

Did any of you have lessons?

Paul: Some of us did, others just self-taught through music magazines, high school bands, and our CD collection.
Neil: Nope, self taught.

Are there any celebrities that you would like to beet up and if so why?

Paul: Not really.. we're not violent people.
Neil: Does Spongebob Squarepants count? I see that little fucker everywhere! I want to pummel the shit out of him.

If you could be on any TV program either as a character or as a band playing on the show what would it be?

Paul: Survivor? Probably an odd choice, but half of the band loves that show Simpsons would be rad too. It would be fun to be turned into cartoons.
Neil: I Love Lucy. I'd rock some jams with Ricky and his band.

Are there any bands that you're listening to a lot at the moment?

Paul: Postal Service, Interpol, Daughters, Armor For Sleep.. and the list goes on.
Neil: Boys Night Out-Make Yourself sick...its not out yet but DAMN its a good album.

And is there anything you would like to add to the end?

Paul: Check out www.silversteinmusic.com for all of the updates on the band. Tours are being planned all of the time, and all of the info gets posted on there.
Neil: I'm hungry, I'm gonna go make some grilled cheese sandwiches.
