How and when did Down To A Science form? How did you all meet?
The current lineup was formed in April 2010. We all found each other online as musicians each looking to form or join a band with similar influences living reasonably locally to each other. We arranged a practice together and haven’t looked back!
Tell me about your recent video shoot for your new single, 'Ghosts'. How did you find the whole experience?
The whole experience was absolutely fantastic. We learned so much about the filming process and what it takes to make a great video. Although we had a lot of fun it was also very tiring work on the day for both us and the crew but as you can see from the finished video it was definitely worth it and we are so proud of it. Video Ink were great guys to work with and we’d love to make another video with them at some point.
As a young band starting out, what are you finding to be the biggest challenges?
The biggest challenge we’ve found is being a ‘small fish in a big pond’. There are so many bands out there all competing for the same thing and want to be heard. And being a fairly new band we have so far to go just to catch up with bands that have been doing it longer.
I imagine, as a mainly male band with a female lead singer, that you get compared a lot to bands such as Paramore. Do you welcome those kinds of comparisons or are you trying to get away from that kind of image?
For us it’s a bit of both. We are by no means just a Paramore wannabe band. Our music, although similar, has many differences to that of Paramore. Also, our singer Emma plays guitar which creates a different dynamic to our look as a band than that of Paramore, so we don’t think it’s right for us to be compared to them. But at the same time we want to embrace all of the Paramore fans that could also become Down To A Science fans, given the chance. And if having our name mentioned in the same sentence as theirs is going to help build our fanbase and draw interest then that’s a positive thing.
How do you go about writing songs? Is there a main songwriter in the group or is it a more collaborative process?
Emma writes all the lyrics but the music writing is a collective effort.
Who would you say are your main musical influences?
As musicians we all have traditional rock influences ranging from the heavy meta lof Metallica and Iron Maiden right across the board to the pop-punk of Blink182 and even poppier Mcfly. Our sound as a band now though is more narrowed down to the alternative rock and pop-punk genres. Bands like Paramore, Fall Out Boy and You Me At Six.
Who would be your dream band to tour with?
Blink 182– Legends. Also albeit a guilty pleasure of ours we’d love to tour with Mcfly! That would be fun.
Random question time - if you were a ghost, who would you want to come back and haunt?
We’d all come back and haunt Emma’s University lecturers that keep giving her schoolwork to do. We’d either try and scare them away completely or scare them into giving her top grades!
Tell me a bit about your upcoming EP release. When will it be out and what can people expect to hear?
We would like to have recorded enough songs by the summer in order to be able to put together a six or seven track EP. No exact date yet but definitely later in the year. Ghosts will be one of the tracks and you can expect the same kind of sound and style heard throughout the other tracks too, which is the direction we are heading and feel is starting to become our own.
What has the band got planned for the rest of 2012?
Writing and recording mainly. Also playing gigs as regularly as we can to promote the current single and video.
Is there anything else you'd like to say or promote?
We’d like to say a big thank you to all our fans for their continued support and for helping to make the release of Ghosts such a huge success for us. And for everyone we’ve worked with directly in 2012 so far. We promise that the rest of 2012 will see a lot more exciting stuff come from us so keep your eyes and ears peeled.
A big thank you to Dan and the band for the interview. You can check out their awesome video for Ghosts right here and make sure you check out their official site too at www.downtoascience.co.uk!
