An Insight into I-(Def)-I
Review by Phil
A magnificently monstrous clash of metal and melody, Manchester dwellers I-(def)-I don’t intend to be a victim of ignorance. It is impossible to ignore music that seems to radiate out of every wall, pinches every hair on your skin and begins to prey on your vulnerable eardrums. I-(Def)-I are already receiving recognition in a music-laden society, supporting Stone Sour at the Manchester Academy and recently having their music played on the Radio One Rock Show: The black rose sent by Venus is clearly spreading to more and more embracing hands.
Unfortunately, I was only able to review a sampler of I-(Def)-I’s aorta slicing sound. However, for the two tracks that exist on the sampler it certainly is no disappointing exposition. The first song on the sampler is entitled ‘When Venus sends a black rose’ and received airplay on the 14th December on Radio One’s Rock Show, as featured track from the ‘Organ Radio 21’ compilation CD, into which I-(Def)-I notoriously inputted. It instantly sets the trait of sound for this violent quad, opening with eardrum penetrating screams, the song delivers a cohesive mix of smooth melody with coarse, bellowing lyrical imperatives. After listening to the entire track is impossible to deny your acknowledgement to the destructive passion that is emitted through I-(Def)-I’s musical medium.
The second song, dubbed ‘Frailty’ continues to offer the talented fusion of melody and predatory sound, with an addictive harmonic chorus that dances beautifully over the backdrop of metallic carnage.
I-(Def)-I’s talent cannot be questioned, their material is strong and they are able to produce sound that may one day hunt for and steal souls. However, I-(Def)-I cater for a very particular audience, on this sampler they do not produce anything that is formidably outstanding, genre splitting or incredibly unique: They seem only to turn another page in the metal meets emotion journal. Nevertheless, what they do create is able to stand alongside music created by already well-established bands and if you’re a fan of such bands as Stone Sour, not listening to this band will do you more harm than good.
