FALL OUT BOY

Interview by Gina at Glasgow Cathouse on March 14th, 2004

I've just wrestled my way through a crowd and mest crappheads (amongst others) to get into the Cathouse in Glasgow and catch up with Pete, bassist from Chicago soft core rockers Fall Out Boy to answer some questions, during soundcheck while they are here on their first visit to Scotland.

Hiya Pete, so how's your day been so far?

It is going well, I've slept most of today.

Have you been out around Glasgow at all today?

Not really, I haven't had a chance to today.

How's the tour so far? Where have you been to already?

The tour's been awesome, we were in London, Birmingham, Manchester and here.

Cool, so what's been the best show so far then?

I like the Birmingham show best so far, Manchester was cool but none of our equipment worked. The kids were really cool and the show was good but..........yeh! I've heard really good things about Glasgow though! So is it 'glasgow' or 'Glasgaoow'? (Pete sits for a second and contemplates how he will say Glasgow at tonight's show.)

It's Glasgow, whatever, no one will care I think.

So if I say Glasgow! will I be alright?

Yeh, it will be alright.

Yeh so we have heard that the shows are pretty crazy here.

Yeh, Glasgow has seemed to gain a good reputation by other bands that have been, but it is odd you are here the same night as Reel big fish, Goldfinger, things like that never seem to happen here.

Yeh that's the same as last night in Manchester, it was right next door last night though.

So how did you get on tour with Mest and did you know them before this tour?

We had been doing a tour with them for like 5 weeks and they asked us if we would wanna come to the UK so we were like, "yeh sure, obviously, who's gonna turn that down?!"

Have you noticed any difference between your UK and US audiences?

Yeh its like, weird, obviously we are bigger in the US but at the same time I think the crowds are just different in general. They both go just as crazy but in a different way, like in the US if you say, like, "ok everyone just go off at this part" they like all jump in unison, if you've seen videos you'll know what im talking about, but in the UK everyone kinda rocks out and does their own thing, but yeh its cool!

Is there anything you can't leave home without when you go on tour?

Um I need the internet really bad, do you know if there are any internet cafes around here?

Yeh theres one just up the street from here (I give Pete some directions to fulfil his internet needs!) What's the best tour you have ever been on?

Um, we had a lot of fun going out with The Early November, Hidden in Plain View in the US. Their awesome! I'd say that's the best one but we had a lot of fun with Allister, a lot of fun with The Reunion Show.

What's your favourite song to perform and why?

I like playing 'Saturday' cuz it's just kinda crazy and we throw our stuff around and jump on stuff, kind of, I don't know. I like playing our new songs as well, I don't think we'll get a chance to play them on this tour but I'd definitely like to.

Have you discovered any new bands since you have been over here?

I have, I like Muse a lot, Um, Funeral for a Friend and we met the guys from Eckofreddy last night, I dunno, they're a smaller punk band from Manchester, they are nice, though.

What's the best piece of advice you have ever recieved?

In my life? Or in the band?

Both!

In my life, be yourself and do your own thing. In the band, change your underwear everyday!

What are your favourite bands to listen to right now?

This band from Chicago called 'The Academy' and this band from the States called 'Nightmare Of You'. They're the new Movielife band, they are awesome.

How long did it take to write and record 'Take this to your grave'?

We wrote it in like three or four months and recorded it in about a month or so.

I asked about it in music stores around here and I could only find it in one, is there a reason why nobody had it here?

It only got officially released in the UK two days ago and it's a different version from the US. The UK version comes in a plastic case and the US version comes in a cardboard box.

What do you like to do when you're not touring?

Sleep, watch movies, hang out with my friends, hang out with my Mom, go on the internet! I like to always go on the internet!

So what's this year's plans for FOB except for the new EP/DVD in May and will that be released in the UK in may aswell?

Um the EP will first be released in the US and then it might come to the UK as an import, so I don't know if it will get an official UK release, if it sells well it will I'd say. I dunno, I'm not really in charge of that stuff!

You just make the music, right?

Yeh!

What's your biggest highlight since you have been in Fall Out Boy?

Playing really cool shows in Chicago probably, a bunch of them have been really cool. Then being able to go to Europe, really cool you know, it's like we thought this band wouldn't go, like who would care about us over in England or France or wherever?

Any funny tour stories this time?

Nothing that funny, I think most of it's being us not being able to understanding how your money works at all and throwing away coins and realising those were pounds?!

And thats it! Any last words you wanna say?

Go to falloutboyrock.com , on the internet! and thankyou for the interview, you did a excellent job!

Why thankyou Pete, I think I did OK if I do say so myself! Thanks to Pete for taking the time to talk to me before the show. You can check out more information on Fall out Boy at falloutboyrock.com. The new acoustic EP/DVD ,"My heart will always be the B-side to my tongue" Is avaliable in the US on May 18th on Fueled by Ramen.
