Emit - Self-titled

Review by Aneequa

First of all I have to give credit to whoever wrote this CD’s press release as they have taken a great deal of time and care to ensure they include essential information such as ‘one member of the band dabbled in erection modelling in 2002’(it’s always good to know these things!?).

I was dubious when I read that this band labelled themselves as ‘art-rock’ but as soon as I put on the CD the first song ‘Gum’ gripped me from the intro as soon as the drums kicked in and I was pleasantly surprised that the singer actually has a really powerful but beautiful voice. The chorus ‘This is a black hole, sucking me in..’ is definitely catchy and memorable after just one listen.

The second track ‘Stereo Love’ had a different sound and was much slower and chilled out with a definite dub/reggae influence-and a human beatbox (how often do you get to hear one of these anymore?!). This song is so relaxing you can imagine lying in a hammock on a tropical island. A definite stoner song!

After the slower track, track 3 hits you like a bus coming out of nowhere. ‘Argument Amnesiac’ starts off fast and loud and maintains interest even when it slows down. The vocal styles are definitely more art-rock sounding on this track but very powerful. I can see this one being a favourite live song.

This CD definitely dispelled any preconceptions I have about this genre of music. Emit show that they are not just a one trick pony and can do a variety of different styles of song- and do them well. I enjoyed listening to it and think this band have the potential to really go somewhere!
