"Are you lazy or distracted?"

23 October 2004  - Jon

I know it's beena while since I wrote a column, but frankly, there hasn't been too much to write about has there? I don't really want to talk about Ken Bigley and cast a vast air of depression across the site, nor do I want to talk about the US election - mainly because I don't understand it.

Instead I want to talk to you about a little something that's slowly happening to me. I'm nearly 17, and I'm doing my course in England, equivilant to A-Levels. In a few weeks time I have an essay on knowledge to hand in. I haven't started it yet. I was lying in bed Sunday night wondering why I hadn't started. Well, I've just got the new Crash Bandicoot game, and I've been playing that, eh, and before that it was Ratchet And Clank, and whenever I go on the internet I got onto my forum and chat. Oh yeh, I've got that maths revision to do as well. And that Spanish work. And that music homework. Oh, biology too. And I've got to read 20pages of "The Little Prince" too.

Then I looked at my friends. Some of them are sitting in my boat. Some of them are miles ahead, fully up to date, with no mistakes. Others are miles behind. So how come myself and all those with and behind me can't keep up? I've narrowed it down to 4 things. One: The others are just ahead, we're at the right speed. Probably wrong. Two: We can't be bothered. True in some cases with some people. Three: We're over-worked? Some would argue that point. Or Four: We're easily distracted? I think it's number four.Right now, I could be starting any one of my homeworks. Instead, I'm writing about thinking about them for a website? Is this distraction? Or laziness?

Which is when I started thinking about whether all these people the media class as lazy or stupid or whatever they use - are THEY distracted by something? Be it under the surface of observable?

So whenever you've got something you need to do, but you're not doing it, ask yourself why you're not doing it. What are you doing instead? What category do you fit into? Are you lazy or distracted? Something for you to think about.

Thanks for reading.
