September 18th, 2004 - Jon

Quite a short column this time, everyone.

I was actually proud of parliament today. Yup. They've put their heads together and have banned fox-hunting in England. 356 to 156 in favour of banning fox-hunting. For me, personally, this is a very pleasing result, as I am against hunting of all kinds. Not just foxes, but all other animals used for their fur or their bones.

However, as part of the protest, I had mixed feelings towards the pro-hunters. One pro-hunter decided to walk for three days from Cambridge to London, dressed as a fox. Upon arrival she took off the costume and produced the message: "For fox sake, don't ban hunting." That's how to protest! (Not by dressing up as Batman and standing on the queens house!)

But I tell you what isn't right... getting into riots with police and invading the houses of parliament. The previous time that had happened was in 1647. Brute force is not the way to protest.

If anything, it probably swung parliament the other way, and fox-hunting is no longer a rich man's sport in England. There is one piece of bad news, though. An estimated 26,000 foxhounds are to be put down. The dogs have no home to go to, as they've been born and trained to hunt and kill. Another case of wrong-doing in the world of looking after animals. Hopefully now things will change for the better. Thanks for reading.
