Coerce- Thailand Dreams

Review by Ellen

The four piece set (Adam vocals, James guitar, Chris bass and Liam drums) 'Coerce' who are based in Kent, formed in late 1999 and have since been working hard on getting their sound heard in their home area and beyond. They have been involved in touring across the country, playing at venues such as Nottingham, Birmingham and 'the Caven' in Liverpool using their own material and various other artists work (eg. Incubus, Deftones and Tool). They have not yet been signed and are currently searching for management.

Their single 'Thailand Dreams' is much the same as many other bands out there that fall into the metal/ rock scene category. From listening to the single, they do not present an orignal sound, however this is not a bad thing as their material will definitely appeal to the masses and in time will hopefully allow for a successful fan following, as the quartet have a lot of potential.

The single itself is full of energy and aggression; straight from the start a sensation is injected, that causes a desire to, or want of being thrown in amongst a moshpit. With a beat that is constant and similar to that of a James Bond style track that drifts in and out of a melodic path. It is catchy and leaves a memorable impression. The introduction is promising and fully maintains this level the further you go into the song, justifying the band's talent once the vocals are developed. It can be heard in Adam's vocals a certain passion, power and almost frustrated attitude from the young male, similar to that of Zack De La Rocha (Rage Against the Machine). This is then accompanied by various amounts of forceful demonic growls. The small pauses between the drum beat and guitars are used to break down the flow of rhythm which could become boring after a while, Whereas this break allows the single to express it's passion and keeps the interest of the listener. The song is well pieced together, using both a fast paced beat that drives the song on and a drifting melody for when the chorus approaches. The single supplies listeners with a blend of various other artists, for example, a mix between Incubus, with the twangy guitar riffs that appear here and there throughout this song and the renowned heavy drumming of Machine Head. So if you find that your taste in music lays within the boundaries of these two fairly different bands then this is definitely worth a listen. Without doubt it is an adrenaline pumping song, which you will find yourself humming for days.

A 3 track demo which the band have recently recorded is available on their website, that reveals how wide spread their musical style goes. If you want to know more about the guys, or just want to hear some of their other material, go check them out at www.coerceband.net.
