Iconcrash

Finland is known as the right place if you’re looking for good music and it’s often presenting us with great bands not to mention new sonorities. It’s necessary to quote it before I begin to tell you about another phenomenon from the country: Iconcrash.

The Helsinki band has its music influenced by names such as Killing Joke, Samhain, Cocteau Twins, Sneaker Pimps, Godflesh, New Order, The Church, Venus Outback, Slowdive, The Cure, Napalm Death, Circle, The Misfits, Suede, Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, Björk among others and it is definitely a melodic mix of rock and electronic music with deep and dark feelings when it comes to the lyrics.

Apart from most bands, Iconcrash has started as a one man’s project. The Finnish musician Jaani Peuhu has been writing several songs as if he were listening to all of them inside his mind and to complete the magic he’s also used any sounds similar from his past bands. The result for such has come on 2005’s spring: the album Nude: composed, produced and almost totally performed by Jaani. On the same year, to be able to perform live, Jaani has gathered some very talented musicians to play with him but today, the lineup is formed by:  Jaani Peuhu (vocals, programming and guitar), Matti Toivonen (guitar, backing vocals), Anu Tukeva (synths, backing vocals), Riku-Niilo Mattila (bass) and Oskari “Oze” Vilmunen (drums).

Their second album “Enochian Devices” (2010) is a great source to explore the band’s most intimate sonorities once its roots are based on the Spiritual world as its title already suggests. It’s deeper than regular rock albums and the lyrics express the connection to the 16th century enochian magic not to guide people to a new religion but to make them meditate about their own. The first singles from this same album “Strange, Strange Dark Star” and “Everlasting” has been on the top of the Finnish charts and also performed on the biggest radios from the country: Ylex and Radio Rock.

For this year, a new release is on the way. Iconcrash’s third album has been mixed on the past days in London. The release is scheduled for this first semester around spring and it’ll later be announced by Iconcrash’s record company EMI.

So, as we wait for their new album, we can check what’s happening to the band at:
