Obsession isn’t the first album from Eighteen Visions, but probably the most easily recognised. The lads hail from California and have brought their post-hardcore/punk influenced view on music to the sunny British shores. The first thing I noticed about “obsession” is it ranges from one extreme to another, going from gritty, growl-like vocals in “Crushed” to melodic singing in “Said And Done” The guitar and rhythm section have a definite heaviness about them, but James’ vocals manage to balance the record out. At times I can’t quite make my mind up to whether he’s singing or screaming. He successfully manages to merge the two together. He said himself “I didn’t want to push the screaming too much as it didn’t really fit in with the record”. Ancient Eighteen Vision fans are bound to be shocked at what is another dramatic change in sound. In general the whole album Is full of heavy guitar riffs, half scream half melodic vocals, with emotionally charged lyrics. However there are times to pause with lighter tracks like “This Time”, “I Should Tell You” ahd the lovely “Said And Done” It’s a great album, Eighteen Visions add to the ever growing post-hardcore scene joining Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine. Their popularity is bound to grow; things are only looking up for James and Co.
